Every month I make a post to tell folks what I'm working on, a) because it seems polite, b) because it keeps me accountable, if only to myself, and c) so you will understand why I do not have a social life. This is the January 2016 post. I am already making posts for 2016. This is faintly awesome and faintly horrifying, all at the same time. Hooray for contradictions!

To quote myself, being too harried to say something new: "These posts are labeled with the month and year, in case somebody eventually gets the bizarre urge to timeline my work cycles (it'll probably be me). Behold the proof that I don't actually sleep; I just whimper and keep writing."

Please note that all books currently in print are off the list, as are those that have been turned in but not yet printed (Chaos Choreography, Every Heart a Doorway, Feedback). Once Broken Faith, The Nativity of Chance, and Magic For Nothing are off the list because they're finished and in revisions with the Machete Squad. The cut-tag is here to stay, because no matter what I do, it seems like this list just keeps on getting longer. But that's okay, because at least it means I'm never actively bored. I have horror movies and terrible things from the swamp to keep me company.

Not everything on this list has been sold. I will not discuss the sale status of anything which has not been publicly announced. If you can't remember whether I've announced something, check the relevant tag, or go to my website, at www.seananmcguire.com. Please do not ask why project X is no longer on the list. I will not answer you.

***

Down Among the Sticks and Bones.
Prequel to Every Heart a Doorway. Portal fantasy, straight up, no chaser; third-person protagonist. There isn't much I can say until you've read the first book, but it's breaking my heart. Status: 28,000 words in, on target to finish this month.

Deadlands: Bone Yard.
My first tie-in novel! There is a carnival involved, because I am a predictable bunny. Also ghost wolves and mad science. It's gonna be fun. Status: getting final licensee approval before starting.

The Brightest Fell.
October Daye, book eleven. Urban fantasy/fairy tale noir, modern setting, first-person protagonist. I can't say much about this book yet, since you're now all two books behind me, but it's gonna be fun. Status: outlined, will begin work soon.

Tricks for Free.
InCryptid, book seven. Paranormal romance/urban fantasy, modern setting, first-person protagonist. Antimony Price takes her second turn as a lead character. Status: outlined, will begin work soon.

Echo.
Echo, book one. YA science fiction about parallel universes. Sort of Fringe meets The OC. With mathematicians and science, because I'm still me. Status: in outlines, getting ready to write the sample chapters.

Sit, Stay, I Hate You.
Coyote Girls, book two. Young adult horror/paranormal romance, modern setting, first-person protagonist. Having survived the events of Lycanthropy and Other Personal Issues, Clady would really like it if her life would settle down and get, y'know, easy for a little while. Clady is not going to be terribly happy with me, either. Status: officially paused, waiting for the edits on Lycanthropy.

Pretty Poison Apples.
The sequel to Nativity of Chance, and that seasonal monarchs book I've been threatening to write forever. Stop looking at me like that. Status: researching.

Silver Slipper Blues.
The Ongoing Trials of Dorothy of Oz, book one. I'm blocking out the structure. I think this is a trilogy. More news to come, status: researching.

The Best Thing.
My deconstruction of the magical girl genre is a go! Status: twenty-two chapters (all of issues one through five, half of issue six) done, rolling right along. You can read it now at Thrillbent.com.

There are lots of other books floating around here—some finished and slated to be worked on further, others pending getting started—but these are the ones you're likely to hear the most about, at least currently. I'll update this list from time to time, as things move from "project" to "print" and new things take their places on the workshop floor.

I don't normally read RPG tie-in novels, but a Seanan McGuire RPG tie-in novel is a whole other kettle of squid, Got Wot! And Deadlands is so delightfully kitchen-sinkish to begin with.

You're writing more Oz? And it might be a trilogy?

'scuse me. Need to go jump up and down and make high-pitched noises now.

I really, really caution against getting overly excited by anything on the current projects post that doesn't also appear in the Inchworm Girl. These are things that I'm writing that take up enough space to be relevant, not things that have been sold or have any sort of guaranteed pub date.

Too late. But that's okay. I'm a Dark Tower fan. I'm used to long waits and ambiguity ;).
