Just a quick reminder that tomorrow will mark the release of "Please Do Not Taunt the Octopus," a new Newsflesh novella focusing on the lab, life, and times of Dr. Shannon Abbey. The novella will be available through the Orbit Short Fiction Program, as well as through a friendly e-book retailer near you.

After release, when some of you have finished the text in fifteen minutes, this will serve as your discussion post. (So basically, starting tomorrow, there will probably be spoilers here.)

Newsflesh!

"Am I going to die?" she asked. She sounded almost hopeful.

My heart broke when I realized where the Fox had come from, and it broke all over again when I read this.
I hope she has found whatever peace she can with Dr. Abbey.

Got it thru iTunes! Hurrah!

Great! I've had "Please do not taunt the octopus" on my Amazon.com wishlist for a few weeks; thank you very much for reminding us. Dr. Abbey was one of my favorite side characters.

Also, as long as people may be heading to Amazon to buy stories, preorders are available for Indexing: Reflections (Kindle Serials) (Indexing Series Book 2). I've got my copy ordered for my Kindle app and will be automatically getting it on August 11. For $1.99, that's a great deal on a gift that keeps on giving every two weeks... (I didn't want to take chances on forgetting to read it as soon as possible).

I hope this does not constitute thread hijacking (derailling? tangenting?), but hey, as long we're shopping for short stories by you online....

This was perfect. I love Dr. Abbey, I love her voice, I love your deep appreciation of the banality of academia, even when you're a semisecret off the grid research lab. I love how she is so matter-of-fact about everything. I love Tessa (and overall, the backdrop of believable and amazing secondary characters that you build). I love the pop-culture references (Legos!)

And oh, Foxy.

Love love love. I want to devour it again, even though I should be building syllabuses for the fall.

Wow. Amazing to see The Fox drop off and Elaine emerge...and Elaine to tell us why she prefers to be The Fox.

If I had to be stuck in a world where zombies are a thing, I'd want to be one of Dr. Abbey's people. She's my favorite.

And I LOVE who our "mystery woman" turned out to be. So very pleased to see her. I hope she can find some happiness with Dr. Abbey and her people. <3

You have broken my heart this week (in a good way). I resisted reading "Show & Tell" because I knew it would hurt, but I have finally read it before reading this. And...oh, oh, I want to sneak in there and rewrite it to have a happy ending, or at least a less-tragic one, because OW. And poor Foxy. I hope...I hope she can be okay with Dr. Abbey. There are far worse people for her to end up with. But oh God she did her best, and I have to admit, I can't argue with her not wanting to remember either....

Hard to read either of these and not think of my two, though. Makes me want to hide them away from the world, but that doesn't work in the Newsflesh world any better than in ours, I don't think. Even if there are stronger reasons to try it.

I'll just be over here going through tissues like whoah.

I knew, when the woman showed up, that she was Foxy... which meant that she had been Elaine. But oh, i loved watching Dr. Abbey put the pieces together, and my heart broke for Elaine again when it became clear why she had to be Foxy, why she couldn't bear being Elaine.

I kind of want to see Dr. Abbey interact with Dr. Shanti Cale. Although I shudder to think of a universe in which BOTH of their varieties of mad science are necessary. :-)

It would require a third mad science universe, with gate technology.

Sigh. Before reading, I thought, 'I hope this isn't as sad as The Day the Dead Came to Show and Tell.' Talk about prophetic!! Poor Foxy.

An excellent story. I love Dr. Abbey, I love Joe, and I even (kinda, sorta) love the octopus.

I don't know if it helps, but you don't have to reply to this comment- I know you're recuperating from Cons.

Finally finished this book this morning. I loved it. My poor memory means I couldn't remember if we'd known the Elaine/Foxy connection from THE DAY THE DEAD CAME TO SHOW AND TELL, but it certainly caught me as a gut wrenching and amazing twist on this read. I loved the way the drugs were written, I was so relieved Joe made it through, I enjoyed Not!Daisy, and I adooooooooooooored Barney and would love to see him again. Also was so pleased to check in on Alaric and Maggie!

Thanks for another fantastic book.
