Well, it's that time again: time to inform the world "this is what I did last year, please remember me as you begin filling out your nomination forms." It's a strangely nerve-wracking time, combining "everybody does it" with "but people will still yell at me for excessive self-promotion." And I'll be honest: I really struggled with the question of whether or not I should make a post this year. Not because I think I'm going to be nominated for All The Things, but because last year's fun adventure in "she posted twice, BURN THE WITCH" was basically my definition of anti-fun.

At the end of the day, I decided that I will make my posts, as I have always made them; this is my career, and if you don't want to read about it, you don't have to. But I will also acknowledge, and continue to acknowledge, that two posts and a handful of tweets is not excessive self-promotion: it's doing my damn job. I'm going to keep saying that until people stop trying to say otherwise.

Now, on to the work!

Novels.

Midnight Blue-Light Special
Chimes at Midnight
Parasite (as Mira Grant)

Note that the 2013 Velveteen collection was not eligible for most awards, as it contains stories originally published prior to 2013.

Novellas.

"Hook Agonistes" (co-written with Jay Lake)
"We Both Go Down Together"
"How Green This Land, How Blue This Sea" (as Mira Grant)

Novelettes.

"Bad Dream Girl"
"Married in Green"
"Sweet Poison Wine"
"The First Fall"
"Loch and Key"
"Daughter of the Midway, the Mermaid, and the Open, Lonely Sea"
"Forbid the Sea"

Short Stories.

"Laughter at the Academy: A Study in the Development of Schizotypal Creative Genius Personality Disorder (SCGPD)"
"Emeralds to Emeralds, Dust to Dust"
"Homecoming"
"Train Yard Blues"
"Frontier ABCs: The Life and Times of Charity Smith, Schoolteacher"
"Red as Snow"

Best Related Work.

Stars Fall Home (second edition, blue cover)

This one requires a bit of explanation. Basically, the original album was released in 2007, and was the best we could do at the time. For 2013, we remastered all the tracks; re-recorded some of the instrumentals; totally redesigned the liner notes and album art; and added a bonus track. Because encyclopedias and other works which frequently have multiple editions have been eligible in this category in the past, and because more than 20% of the album was changed, I believe it fits the eligibility requirements for this year's award season.

I will make a post later about things I hope we'll remember as the nominating season gets moving, although I'll say now that I would really love it if people would consider Sheila Gilbert for Best Long-Form Editor and John Joseph Adams for Best Short-Form Editor. They make me better. They make a lot of people better.

That's all for now.

Someone (with respect to the Wheel of Time series, but it should apply to other works) over at [livejournal.com profile] hugo_recommend noted that serial works could eligible for the Hugo based on the date they end. (The post is here, with the relevant clause quoted.)

Also what about Indexing?

Okay, that's a valid point, and since none of the individual pieces have been nominated, I believe that means the collection would be eligible.

Indexing is ditto.

Well, I thank you for making it, and not just because it's hard to remember what was published when, but because when it comes to short fiction, I have NO BLOOMING IDEA what category it belongs in. I don't want to waste a nomination filling in the right title in the wrong category, you know? SO THANK YOU.

People who think posts such as these are excessive can bite me. :)

That's sort of my theory. Like, I have to look up what's a novelette vs. a short story. Whether folks want to nominate me or not is up to them, but if they're gonna do it, I'd like it to be in the right category.

I've heard they will put stories in the correct category if you nominate them but I normally use all my nominations so I want to make sure they all get counted correctly.

I absolutely love it when authors I enjoy put together posts like this. I makes figuring out which story goes where easier, but more importantly, it helps me make sure I didn't miss anything. I might be a bit of a completist, what can I say?

Sweet science, you're prolific! *applauds you* Forbid the Sea had me crying outright, so that's definitely getting my nomination! (And I just bought two anthologies for Kindle so that I can read the two short stories of yours on the list that I haven't already read).

Best of luck with the nominations! Here's hoping for another banner year!

I was going to post the "holy prolific author, Batman!" comment, but you beat me to it. All that and a full-time job or two. I feel like a slug.

It's your blog / journal and anyone who objects to your informing your readers about your work, can put their crabby opinions where the sun don't shine.

I'm just now reading the novelettes because of the links you posted last night. What wonderful characters!!!!!!

Next, I'm going to look for Parasite when I go to Tallinn next week. They have real bookstores there.

You go on with your self-promotion! Whoever indicated that two post and a handful of tweets was "over promotion" is maniacally modest.

Thanks! This really helps me make sure I put the right things in the right slots.

Where would Indexing fit?

In a couple categories you have more than could be nominated do you have any favorites? For instance the Novelettes about Jonathan and Fran were all great, but they sort of run together in my mind.

Will totally use my own opinion where it varies, but figured if there were favorites that could focus efforts.

The individual pieces of Indexing would fit under short story.

In novella, I'd really love to see "Hook" make the ballot. I am so proud of the work I did with Jay, and while I want a Hugo for me, I want one for him just as much.
