Q is for QUESTING BEAST.

Paleantologists call them "Gorgonopsids" and believe that they've been extinct for millions of years. Isn't it fun when science is wrong?

There are two known species of Questing Beast. They may both be extinct; we really don't know, and given the tendency of Questing Beasts to eat anyone who comes remotely near them, we're really not in any hurry to find out. The North American variety at least rattles when it's getting ready to launch itself at your head, which is much more polite than its European counterpart.

African and Indian Questing Beasts have been theorized from the fossil record. We'd really rather not think about that right now.

Neat! Are they any relation to Quetzacotls?

Also - I just read your Flowers of Arizona story. I've... never been in love with mice before.

Date: 2012-02-24 04:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com
Not quite; Quetzacotls are actually off a different evolutionary branch, and are more closely related to dinosaurs than modern gorgonosids or reptiles.

Did you see that the sequel is on my website, for frees?

I'm gleeful that you have already thought about this. As Vulpine137 said, you are the geek scientist.

I did! You are quite generous! ... Since I finished the story over breakfast, I'm trying really really hard to not go poke that until I get home from work, so I can enjoy it without interruption.

Thaaaaaaaaank you! I'm really liking Fran. And the throw-in line out of "Protective Coloration" made me choke with laughter.

oh man.... I have got to give in and buy that anthology. I have a prejudice against anthologies - feels like such a pig in a poke, I'm buying a book full of stuff by authors I don't know, for one little bit by an author I love? But ... if the mice are prominent ... I am about to go give in now.

I got mine right off of the shelf at B&N. They had a couple of copies.

Also, to be fair, the mice are not the heroes. They have some good lines and a fun description about divination, though, which is why I like them.

I have given in. Book has been purchased. OH I adore the mice. Hm, did I miss the description about divination? I don't remember that. Must reread. But later, as now I must go change for my belt test.

If there's reincarnation, I want to come back as either an otter or an Aeslin mouse.

Thank you, it went well. Our sensei moved a number of his adult students, including Miles and I, from white belts right past yellow to gold. Whoa. Daughter has also moved up to green belt.

Seanan? I so badly miss a number of the earlier Aeslin mice stories. I had them in memories but I no longer have permission to read them. I especially miss the Day of Choosing, which is what got me hooked on the whole thing to start with. Any chance I could ever get to read them again?q

Date: 2012-02-25 09:10 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com
No one has permission to read them right now, because they are not canonical. Some pieces may be reworked into the current and official continuity, but the original stories will never be unlocked.

From: [identity profile] celticdragonfly.livejournal.com
Ah. As you wish it, of course. Consider this then to be a deeply felt plea that many of those stories, especially the Day of Choosing, may be reworked and available in new forms in the future.

One of the reasons that I love your stuff so much is that I knew, as I Googled "Gorgonopsids" that I would be learning something new, and that it wasn't something that you'd just made up. Because your mind just works that way, and I appreciate that it does!
