Newsflesh trilogy, final stats.

Start date: September 4th, 2005.
End date: September 2nd, 2011.

Volumes: Three.
Words: 455,814.
Pages: An awful lot.

...so yeah. That happened.

Last night, at approximately 9:15PM, I finished processing the last of the editorial changes to Blackout, and kicked the manuscript off to The Agent for a final typo check. She kicked it back to me this morning, and at approximately 5:21AM, I finished correcting the last of the grammatical and typographical errors. The book is back with her for a final final check, and then it's off to The Other Editor, to begin the process of transforming into something you can read.

It's over.

I have other things to do in this universe, other stories to tell and to enjoy telling, but this story, this trilogy...it's over. I am finished with the Masons. Their tale is done.

I've never finished anything like this before. I feel a little numb and a little scalded and a little overwhelmed, all at once.

Thank you. Thank you to everyone who's read these books, recommended these books, loved these books, hated these books, or interacted with them in any way. Thank you to Michael and Amanda, Kate and GP, Spider and Steve, Alan and Jude, Brooke and Vixy and Bill and Mike and Rae and Sunil and Amy and Cat and...and...and everyone. Just thank you.

Thank you for helping me tell this story. I never could have done it on my own.

Alive or dead, the truth won't rest. Thank you for helping me to rise up while I could.

I am actually tearing up while reading this sentence.

Thank you for this trilogy. It has changed how I think about our world.

Reading these books and discussing them (both Feed and Blackout have been selections for our local bookclub) has been an honor and a privilege. I will miss the Masons, but I am grateful you have given us the chance to know them, love them, mourn with them, and cheer for them. It's been a wild ride thus far, and I can't wait for the conclusion.

I am very excited for this book! And I seriously hope there is lots more Dr Abby (who I would love to be).

No need to reply to this comment since you must be crazy right now but I thought you may enjoy this story:

Started a new job last month (infection and immunity research, lots of fun!) and got talking to someone (as you do) about zombie literature. We raved about our favourites and Tuesday last week I leant her Feed in return for World War Z the survival guide. I was off work Friday - Tuesday produced Deadline for her on Wednesday in case she wanted the next one.

She looked sheepish and replied that she'd finished Feed and couldn't wait until Wednesday so had gone out, bought Deadline (and a copy of Feed to be completist) and had already finished reading. We spent the rest of the day discussing it over blood samples. :)

I feel kinda bad that I am only a measly 200 pages into World War Z now. But I need to finish Daniel Defoe's Journal of the Plague Year before I continue.

I adored Feed and I have Deadline sitting here waiting for me to read it.

Problem is you emotionally traumatized me with the ending of Feed but despite this, or maybe because of it, it was one of the best books I've read. I spent hours in tears yet would recommend the book until I turned blue in the face.

So now I stare at the second book in a mixture of fear and desire to know more about the Masons and their crazy world. Your words and stories are seriously powerful. I'm sure I'll be brave enough to pick up Deadline soon. Hopefully before the last book is out.

I almost don't want to read the third book, because I don't want the story to be done. But who am I kidding? I'll inhale it in one day, just like the others. Thank you for making such a fantastic world to immerse myself into.

And congrats for finishing! That's such a huge deal. You should reward yourself with a machete.

Well done!! I'm going to need some time recovering from Feed (I finished reading it at 1:30 this morning) before I start the next book, but it's exciting to know you've finished the trilogy :) I was really gobsmacked by what I've read so far, and I don't use the word 'gobsmacked' lightly.

AHHH! I can't wait!! Feed is the first book by you that I ever read (and I picked it up because I had to laugh out loud at the bloody RSS icon on the cover). So glad that the book had that bloody RSS icon on the cover that made me laugh, otherwise it might have been ages more until I came across what is now one of my favorite trilogies :)

I kept coming back to the cover art, picking it up, checking the back description, putting it back down saying "But I don't like zombie novels" I must have done that 5 or 6 times. Finally I said "Of for crying out loud, buy it already!" Best thing I ever did! I tell everyone I know that Feed and Deadline are the abso-freaking-lute best books I've read in ages. My psychologist loves zombie novels, but I keep telling him that Feed is a political thriller....with zombies! And that Deadline is a medical thriller...with zombies.

I'm like the others that can't wait to read the next book but sad that it will be the last we see of the Masons.

Thank you for letting me enjoy reading again! It's been a while since I've enjoyed a book (or series) this much!

I'm happy for you, and sad for you, and excited for me, because I can hardly wait! What's the release date??!!!

(And Ferrett will be pleased, too, as he is very leery of reading trilogies that haven't been finished - Robert Jordan and George R.R. Martin have permanently scarred him and have a lot to answer for.

It feels strange to read this post because it makes me excited and sad at the same time. For as long as I can remember, I've measured my life in books. When I was in preschool, it was Grimm's fairy tales and Alice in Wonderland; most of my childhood was spent waiting on the next Harry Potter book, and when that series was finished, I didn't think that another series would come along that could possibly affect me more.

I was totally wrong.

From the minute I finished Feed, I was waiting for Deadline. Since the minute I finished Deadline, I've been waiting for Blackout. I think I've learned more about myself from these books than any others, and one day when I look back at "those years when you really find yourself" (as my dad likes to say) I'll remember that they were spent with the Newsflesh trilogy. Thank you.

I remember sitting there with you at a BayCon picnic I don't remember how many years ago, but it may have been the first staff picnic the year you were co-chair, hearing you talk about Rosemary and Rue. I'd heard similar enthusiasm about one's own book hundreds of times before, but there's a difference: you made it happen, and you made it happen in a very big way.

There's always a swell of pride for me when someone I know does well, and you and [livejournal.com profile] cassiealexander are the ones I'm proudest of.

You know when it really hit me, though? When I was having a conversation with Kathryn Daugherty and she said that Feed was the best book she'd read last year. You know how many books she reads, and she's a tough critic, besides.
