It's a Wicked Girls day here in sunny California, where I've just received the confirmation that Wicked Girls is now available for order on CDBaby.com. If you missed the pre-order period, or just need another copy, this is your chance! We're probably going to sell out their available stock pretty quickly, but that's okay; they'll ask me for more, which I will dispatch promptly, and showing them the level of demand will help to set the tempo of their restock requests.

Theodora Goss has written a beautiful contemplation on what it is to be a wicked girl. People I've never met are taking this up as a rallying cry, and that warms my heart and gives me hope.

Emily Gilman has also posted her contemplations on being wicked and lovely, and not living in fear, and these are two brave, bold women I've never met, talking about what it takes to fly.

Be brave. Be true. Fly.

That's all I'll ever ask of you.

ETA: CDBaby now says "out of stock," but will take requests anyway. That's fine. Go ahead and place your order now, and I should have a restock request from them by Monday, at which point they'll have more CDs, and I'll have less.

I trust that you're Dino-dancing in your seat! I love so much that you do, but I'd probably say that the single thing that continues to make me smile is the honest hope that I see you have for those around you. It's not the uber-sweet sentimentality that doesn't expect things from them. Rather, I see you as the brilliant, experienced aunt who knows that people are capable of much more, and who demands it, or gives a well-intentioned rebuke to put the World on the right path.

Thanks again for Wicked Girls. The album is still kicking my ass. In a good way. My sister's getting a copy for her birthday, and the signed print goes to my niece!

Tonight, on our way to see Black Swan, I will play tidbits for my a good friend of mine.

It's hard to be brave. I have failed in the past, and will probably fail again.

but I will pick myself up and try again. 'Cause the road may be broken, but it's there, and where it's not I can blaze a trail my own self.

Your music feeds my soul. Thank you.

It is an awesome, inspiring song. I love the whole CD, really, but I keep skipping back to that track so I can hear it again.

I lent the CD to my housemate, too, who was quite impressed. She thought I liked it in the way I really try to like things from people I like. She didn't expect it to be GOOD.

I've read the lyrics before, but that's the first time I've actually heard it performed. Really, really beautiful...in a vaguely heart-rending way.

Cool-cool. They should send me a restock request at the end of the day, based on how many orders they receive while out of stock. So let's hope for lots, since it's easier to ship large batches (they package better).

Yeah. They only requested 2 of RR&DT, and that's just not enough to motivate me to the post office most days. Sadly.

Well could you sneak one in with the Wicked Girls so my order is fulfilled if I ask nicely ?

I thought I would get all three they sell as I am getting them posted abroad and I assume your songs are as good as your books.

I'm planning to! This will make it a big enough mailing to get me to the post office.

Would that more people in all of our lives only asked us to be true. I so value the people in my world who feel this way! I've gotten several of them back in the past couple years & life is in a much more lovely place because of that.

This CD has inspired me more than any in a very long time. There's been a lot of great music in my life, but very, very little that's left the images in my head and in my heart that Wicked Girls has.

I got mine at Conflikt.

And now look what you've added to your achievements! You did what Woody Guthrie and Pete seeger and Malvina Reynolds and Holly Near and Phil Ochs did. You wrote a song that is really influencing minds and changing the world, making it more the way you know it should be.

The ultimate power of song, and you did it! Congratulations!

Oh, and don't be surprised if you live to see yourself on lists that include those other musicians I just mentioned. You belong there.

Mate. I'd not really been paying attenton to your music posts, I thought I was more interested in your books. I just clicked through and listened to the song. The song hit me like a punch to the stomach, I'm weeping. I've ordered a copy of the CD.

I run marathons, despite being as far from an athlete as possible. When I built my playlist for my next marathon, I will place it in the time for the last kilometer. I have no higher praise.

I've been assuming that Roper has Wicked Girls... am I assuming correctly? 'Cause it's the only thing I'm allowing myself to buy at Capricon next weekend.

Also, it's in Wild Mercy's set list for our Cap concert. With fiddle. Yay!

Aaaaand I still can't listen to Wicked Girls, or even read the lyrics, without it making me cry. (When I play it for other people, I have to leave the room so as not to be distracting.) There really are no words that can express how grateful I am to you for this song, and I love that so many other people feel the same way. ♥

I haven't written a contemplation about the song, but I received the CD at a very fortuitous time, and I want to thank you for that:

I went home for winter break (I'm a college student) and my step-father is an alcoholic, a mean one. That song played through my head every time he got drunk, and it gave me the courage to do things like give him (and my mother, who was the only reason I didn't do this sooner) an ultimatum in the form of, "He drinsk while I'm here, and I'll find somewhere else to live" and then call the police when, the next week, he got completely trashed and started actually throwing things at my mother (usually he just yells and such).

I decided I would be a wicked girl saving myself, rather than trying to just live with it. I went proactive.

Thank you for giving me the last push to take those steps.

I don't say things from the heart like this often or lightly, so forgive me if it comes out sounding stilted: "Wicked Girls Saving Ourselves" helped me save myself. I wasn't raised to be a Wicked Girl (though my mother's parents tried very hard to counter the rest of my family's influences). I was taught being one was Wrong and Bad, and meant that I would never be loved. Then I started meeting Wicked Girls, and I began to think. And you wrote this song, which put into words what I felt, and what friends tried to tell me, and it crystallized into the push I needed at the exact moment everything came together. I hope someday I will be able to hear it without crying. It meant so much to me that I played it for a friend of mine, who ended up leaving a long-time abusive relationship; when she called me to say so, she told me "It was the words It's better to fly" that helped her make up her mind to stop waiting for someone else to show her an escape, and make her own.

Thank you.

I missed the cutoff due to life & budget, so won't get my copy until next weekend at Cap.....but I have been in love with this song since the first time you posted the lyrics. I am so glad to see it, and you, getting a fraction of the praise deserved. And I'm certain much more is on the way.

I've already ordered from CDBaby but do you have any plans to release electronically in the future? I feel silly buying a physical copy just so I can rip it and leave it in my closet.

Date: 2011-02-08 07:42 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com
I don't, sadly. I can't release my cover songs electronically without paying a lot more for the rights, and I can't justify that. So if I did an electronic release, it would lack "Tanglewood Tree" and "Writing Again," and I'm not willing to do that.

I think "Wicked Girls" saved my life yesterday.

In just four days I've lost the ability to do all of the things I love most - reading, long distance walking, lace-making and knitting - and not knowing how permanent that loss is going to be has devastated me.

I read your post yesterday morning (Sunday), and went and played the CD. And played it again. And again.

I've stopped crying, and if I don't yet know where my personal trail is going to take me, I know I can forge a trail of my own if I have courage, and I'm true to what I believe.

I'm thanking God for you today Seanan, because your post, and your music mean I'm here to give those thanks - in person.

Very cool - I'm glad to hear that the song is inspiring people, Sarah and I certainly find it to be very powerful. Also, I'd been racking my brains about who Jane was in the song until following one of the links, causing an "Oh, of course!" moment. We're plotting to bring our copy of the CD to Consonance to collect autographs. :)
