Thanks to your observation, I have now gone on a short Wikipedia dive. The fact that a better idiomatic translation of "Sailor Scout" would be "Schoolgirl Soldier" gets me right here.
(I have watched Madoka Magica, which I loved fiercely, so I'm coming at this all inside out. Since my favorite part of any story is the meta, I'm okay with this order of events.)
