I figured out the "I" thing as an editor almost by accident, but I've tried to use it more. It's very useful. Some sentences probably make perfect sense to other people, but when I look at it, I find my head turned sideways and a blank "huh???" in my head. A good author can take that reaction and make a sentence anyone with an IQ can read and understand. If not told, though, the author won't know to rearrange or re-word to access more readers.

I came a lot later to good critique and still probably lag on that. I hold to "no news is good news" in my life, but in text, that can also translate to "nothing worth commenting on here." A whole book unworthy of comment is unlikely to be published. I make an effort now to point out the things that I really like. "Critique" does not always need to be critical.
