When I was little, I had a book called The Practical Princess by Jay Williams. (Searching for that to verify the title has now given me an urge to buy it so I have it again.) It was definitely a "real princesses save themselves" kind of book, but not with shotguns, which are not my style; this princess saves herself with smarts.
It was a nice little alliterative phrase that stuck with me the rest of my life. You can be pretty and still be smart; you can be smart and still be pretty. Be a practical princess.
