I pitch the Newsflesh books as "Zombie books for people who don't like Zombie books". Yes, there are zombies, but the book is about much more than that. Yes, the dead rose, but not all civilization was destroyed. But what civilization remained and/or regrew is pretty seriously bent as a result.
The best science fiction works are those that use the tropes of SF to tell us something about ourselves, and that is exactly what these books do. They use the tropes of zombie/horror to tell us important things about fear, about the Truth, and about what is really important.
