I think that the whole DRM issue comes in from the piracy issue. (Also, as a musician and an author, I find that the "book" to "CD" conflation doesn't really work very well. It's the replay value question.) As for the "rental" point, which is a very valid one, publishers are only going to view your DRM'd copy as "rented" if you have to return it after a certain number of accesses. Which I can't see being very popular.
