Monday morning footnotes.

1. BART is not on strike. I would say "yay, the unions reached a settlement," but since I left Lilly alone with my Internet-equipped computer just before the strike was called off, I'm going to opt for "yay, my Siamese is not fire-bombing the California coastline to protest Mommy not coming home for a week." Don't mess with the Siamese. You will regret it.

2. Fourteen days. Just saying.

3. My new Netbook is a joy and a wonder, except when it's royally fucking stuff up. Most recently, it has elected to royally fuck up the .ms of Red Hood's Revenge that I was giving a quick polish for Jim. I'm attempting file recovery now, and if that doesn't work, I'll just go through the .ms a second time. Thankfully, it was relatively clean.

4. Also thankfully, my Netbook did not elect to royally fuck up the latest draft of The Brightest Fell (Toby Daye, book five). This is A Very Good Thing. I would be substantially less sanguine about that particular rewrite. There might be screaming, and possibly the eating of human flesh. Mmmm, human flesh.

5. The incredibly awesome stick insect that has been sticking to Kate and GP's front door frame for the last few weeks was gone this morning when I went out to meet the bus. I wish him all good things in his future endeavors, and hope that he is not inside the house, preparing to crawl into someone's ear.

6. I have decided that I don't like second books in trilogies that don't admit to being trilogies when I pick them up. There will be more on this later.

7. I want a nap.

How's by you?

I am terribly annoyed that placing a pre-order for R&R doesn't magically alter the universe so that I get the book early via time travel or magic. Otherwise, I am fine, and glad that BART is running.

[identity profile] seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
If you got my book via time-travel, I'd be annoyed, until assured that this didn't impact my sell-through numbers.

[identity profile] jjloa.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
weird question - is that release date for Rosemary & Rue a North American thing, or a international thing?

Cause I preordered mine, but if it's available as of that date in England I may pick up a copy when I'm there for the plane back and then gift the preordered one to someone I know will like it. I need plane reads!

[identity profile] seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a US edition thing. I believe it'll be available in Canada at the same time. There isn't a confirmed UK edition yet, so any copies you could find in England would be US imports. I don't know when those will be available.

[identity profile] jjloa.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
it is available in Canada at the same time - that's my pre-order :) I just will have to be patient and read it once I recover from jetlag! Thanks

doublechecked to ensure it wasn't just amazon.ca (who I order from normally) giving the september date so I wasn't misleading you - main big bookstore in Canada also listing September 1st.

http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/Rosemary-And-Rue-Seanan-Mcguire/9780756405717-item.html?ref=Search+Books%3a+%2527Rosemary+Rue%2527

(oh, and out of random curiousity I looked at amazon.co.uk & whsmith in the UK - they have it listed there Nov 5, 2009, in case that info is also of use to you.)

"Red Hood's Revenge: So badass it will even @#$% up your computer."

I think that would look pretty darn good on a cover, don't you? :-)

I'm glad book five was safe. How often do you do backups?

[identity profile] seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"Little Red Riding Hood. Sleeping Beauty. And this book. All of them are fully equipped to kick your ass."

I do backups pretty frequently, but with my "traveling" manuscripts, they're often a matter of emailing it to my proofing pool in the morning. So if both files had been borked, I would have lost a night's work, and some sanity points.

Like everyone else, I am just counting the days until Sept. 1

[identity profile] seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Fourteen!

[identity profile] qnofhrt.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It has been raining on and off all morning, which suits how the day has gone so far.

[identity profile] qnofhrt.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
So it's your fault it's raining?

[identity profile] wendyzski.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I heard the BART news here last night and gave a little cheer for you.

[identity profile] vixyish.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too! Except for me it was this morning.

[identity profile] seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
My mother called me (I had already gone to Kate and GP's). I shrieked.

[identity profile] vixyish.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Playing a two-hour outdoor wedding concert in SUDDEN COLD isn't great for colds. However, shoveling ImmuniTEA through my system as fast and in as great quantities as possible apparently is. I have the fastest progressing cold I think I've ever had. (I think I'll take a cold of greater intensity if it goes away quicker.)

[identity profile] cleothyla.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Always a good thing. Hope you feel better.

[identity profile] seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
On the plus side, the super-fast incubators either kill you or clear up very quickly.

6. I have decided that I don't like second books in trilogies that don't admit to being trilogies when I pick them up.

I believe that is an opinion held by all literate humans, although I have no facts to back up my statement.

[identity profile] seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind second books in trilogies that admit to being trilogies. It's when they try to be all stealth that I get rageful.

[identity profile] paradisacorbasi.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Need nap, but am very excited for you. Very very excited for you.

[identity profile] seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Naps good.

I, too, need a nap.

[identity profile] hasufin.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
What netbook did you end up using? I had a hard time deciding on mine, seeing as within the typical price range they're all pretty much identical.

Given that these manuscripts are a significant source of income for you, you might want to consider saving it in multiple locations: Google docs, or MS Live, or just to a handy thumb drive.

[identity profile] seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I have a Dell. I love my Dell. All my computers are Dells, and have been for quite some time.

I actually do save to multiple locations, but backups don't happen instantly, and normally "overnight" is a safe delay.

1. *whew*
2. I can wait. I have to. That said, I am looking forward to having something awesome to read. If you read what I've had to make do with on GoodReads, you will know this for a fact.
3. I envy you the Netbook. I do not envy you the harrassment.
4. *fistpumps*
5. I have an awesome Golden Orb spider on my front porch right now. Every night I think the birds have gotten her, but every morning - nope! There she is, with a brand new web and she is total AWESOME. Or maybe she has a buttload of sisters. I'm not sure.
6. I hate bad books that claim to be the beginning of a trilogy when I DO pick them up. Like - not even the first few chapters of a good book, and now I have to wait for the rest of the story why? *grumbles* No, not your publisher and not recently. But. Erg. Bad planning, bad marketing and writing to those parameters. FAIL.
7. Ditto. I may actually get it today.

For myself:

a. The boy is now 4 and we all survived the party. There's lot of screaming left. Rey needs some awesome for all the yeoman duties.

b. I want a retreat for my birthday. I'll take suggestions. I'd love a writer's retreat in the woods. I'll take yoga at the beach. Something. Calgon is not cutting it anymore.

c. If they make a My Little Pony thumbdrive, you need it. Points if you can wear it around your neck.

YAY SPIDERS!

[identity profile] keristor.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Amazon.co.uk are telling me delivery date of R&R 30 September. I could get it earlier from amazon.com, but only by paying $35 in shipping. I think I'll wait (it's already on pre-order via the UK one anyway, I just thought I'd look in case).

Tomorrow you can sing Thirteen *g*...

[identity profile] seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Woo-hoo prime number!

[identity profile] mkellis.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
One of these days I am going to sit on you until you get a real revision control system and multiple automated backups.

[identity profile] mkellis.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. The main problem is your stubborn insistence on using Word. Revision Control and Word is a messy combination without dropping coin.

On the other hand, the chances of getting you to switch to LaTeX and CVS/git/subverson/etc. are about nil, so...

[identity profile] seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com 2009-08-19 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. There will be no switching of word processing programs. EVER. Just a new version of Word kills my productivity for weeks while I freak out at the computer.
