It gets complicated, because part of "An author must protect their own existence," for me, is the free fiction. It fills the same niche in my brain as fanfic, and keeps me sane...until people start bothering me about it, and making me feel like they don't want to buy the cow anymore, as they have acquired sufficient milk for free.
