Well said. Also reading this, I'm remembering a personal example - asking the guy in the kilt what he's wearing underneath? Almost certainly not appropriate (or funny, for that matter). Probably not harassment unless you're being otherwise obnoxious/suggestive, but at least in bad taste. I don't tend to get this one at fannish events (possibly due to familiarity with kilts), but it always amazes me how many people in the general public seem to think that an appropriate question - often with their kids in tow.
