You forgot one other point:

Some people have come to believe that science is a democracy. Thus, if there is one person who has studied a subject, and thousands of people who disagree with that person, they believe that the one person Must Be Wrong.

This is one of the arguments for Intelligent Design.

(Science is not a democracy. Science is a boxing match. A theory holds the title until such time as a stronger theory comes along.)
